    How We Help

Our team of registered therapists and counsellors provides compassionate, evidence-based psychotherapy and counselling across Cobourg, Port Hope, and throughout Northumberland County. Below are the primary areas where we help clients. We see clients in person at our Cobourg office, or through secure online therapy across Ontario.

    Anxiety

Anxiety is more than everyday worry. It's a racing heart, constant "what ifs," and a world that keeps shrinking as avoidance takes over. If you've been searching for help with anxiety in Cobourg or the surrounding area, our team of registered therapists provides a safe, judgement-free space to help you understand your triggers and quiet the noise.

Our therapists work with clients experiencing generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, health anxiety, and anxiety alongside depression. We draw on evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, a brain-based approach that supports nervous system regulation.

    Our work together focuses on:

    • Managing physical symptoms like panic, racing thoughts, chest tightness, and sleep disruption
    • Breaking cycles of avoidance to reclaim confidence and everyday freedom
    • Building practical coping tools for social anxiety, workplace stress, and daily worry

Available in person at our Cobourg office and through secure virtual therapy throughout Ontario.

    Depression

Depression is more than sadness. It's an exhausting weight that pulls you away from the life you love, draining your energy and making even small tasks feel impossible. If you're looking for counselling help for depression, our team is here to help you break the cycle of withdrawal and reconnect with your sense of self.

Our therapists support clients through a range of presentations, including persistent low mood, situational depression, postpartum depression, seasonal depression, and depression alongside anxiety. We draw on CBT, ACT, and NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, which offers an alternative or complementary option for clients who haven't found full relief through talk therapy alone.

    Our work together focuses on:

    • Breaking stuck thought patterns and identifying the roots of persistent low mood
    • Building practical coping strategies and sustainable daily routines
    • Reconnecting with your energy, your relationships, and your community

Available in person at our Cobourg office and through secure virtual therapy throughout Ontario.

    Trauma & PTSD

Trauma leaves a lasting imprint. It can surface as intrusive memories, flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, or emotional distance from the people you love. Whether the result of a single event or repeated experiences, PTSD and trauma responses can affect every area of life, but healing is possible with the right support.

Our therapists work with clients experiencing trauma and PTSD in a professional, safe environment where you can move at your own pace. We use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), one of the most researched approaches for PTSD and trauma, alongside CBT, and NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, which supports nervous system regulation as the body and brain process difficult experiences.

    Our work together focuses on:

    • Calming physical responses like flashbacks, hypervigilance, and sleep disruption
    • Safely reprocessing past events to reduce the power of triggers
    • Reconnecting with loved ones and restoring a sense of emotional safety

Available in person at our Cobourg office and through secure virtual therapy throughout Ontario.

    Stress & Burnout

Chronic stress and burnout affect your health, your relationships, and your sense of self. Whether the source is demanding work, caregiving responsibilities, financial pressure, or the relentless pace of daily life, ongoing stress takes a real toll, and recovery rarely happens without intentional support.

Our therapists help you understand the patterns driving your exhaustion and build sustainable balance. We draw on CBT, ACT, mindfulness-based approaches, and NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, a brain training approach that supports nervous system regulation, focus, and self-regulation when chronic stress has depleted your reserves.

    Our work together focuses on:

    • Understanding the patterns and beliefs driving your exhaustion
    • Rebuilding energy, focus, motivation, and emotional regulation
    • Setting boundaries and sustainable routines that protect your wellbeing

Available in person at our Cobourg office and through secure virtual therapy throughout Ontario.

    Treatment Methods

Our team uses evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to each client's unique needs. We offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, and Group Therapy, so we can match the right approach to each person we work with.

    Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based approach that examines the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Our therapists use CBT to help clients recognize unhelpful thought patterns, develop practical coping strategies, and build new skills for managing difficult emotions.

CBT is particularly well-researched for anxiety, depression, and stress, though it's used for many other concerns as well. Sessions are typically structured, collaborative, and focused on practical change.

    Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) combines mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Originally developed for intense emotional patterns, DBT has proven effective for mood challenges, relationship difficulties, and moments when emotions feel overwhelming.

Our therapists use DBT-informed approaches to help clients build concrete skills for managing intense feelings, navigating difficult situations, and strengthening their relationships with others.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a trauma-focused approach that helps the brain process distressing memories and reduce their emotional impact. Through guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR allows past experiences to be reprocessed safely.

EMDR is one of the most researched approaches for PTSD, trauma, anxiety, phobias, and grief. This specialized approach is offered by an EMDR-trained therapist on our team.

    Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness-based approach focused on psychological flexibility. Rather than fighting difficult thoughts and emotions, ACT helps clients accept what's outside their control and commit to actions aligned with their values.

ACT is used for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and life transitions. This approach is offered by an ACT-trained therapist on our team, helping clients build meaningful lives even in the presence of difficult feelings.

    NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback

Our practice offers NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback, a non-invasive, dynamic brain training system that works with your brain's natural rhythms to promote greater flexibility and resilience. Unlike traditional neurofeedback, NeurOptimal doesn't diagnose or target specific conditions. Instead, it provides real-time feedback that helps your brain regulate itself naturally.

Clients use NeurOptimal to support challenges with anxiety, sleep, focus, ADHD, trauma, and stress. Sessions are relaxing and comfortable: you simply relax while sensors monitor your brain activity and the system provides subtle audio feedback. NeurOptimal sessions are provided by a trained technician and can be offered as a standalone service or alongside talk therapy.

    Group Therapy (Coming Fall 2026)

Group Therapy brings together clients facing similar challenges in a supportive, therapist-led environment. Sharing experiences with others who understand can be profoundly healing, providing perspective, accountability, and connection that individual therapy sometimes cannot.

Kari Walton will be running group therapy sessions beginning in Fall 2026. If you're interested in joining a future group, please reach out to be added to our notification list.
